Blog & Web design: Commoditization vs. Customization

The internet is such an interesting place to be. Here I am blogging about the Return of Craft and how blogging connects with that, and I find myself pondering the Craft aspect of my own work. Is there a place in the world, anymore, for individual, costly(!), customized web design? After all, with automated DIY shops proliferating, why should anyone pay $50 per hour or more for an ecommerce web design project that could last over a month?

People who want the best and most unique site, and who understand what’s required in terms of cost and talent, that’s who.

But that’s not everybody. In fact, that’s not even most people. For most people, the commodization of web design and ecommerce is an affordable path into running an online business they may not have been able to afford previously.

That’s why I’m going to offer WordPress Templates for sale, at varying tiers of customization and price. The higher the customization and more personal the services for a template, the more it will cost. Templates which don’t require extensive customization will not cost that much. Eventually, I’m going to bundle the templates with web hosting services as well, so that a new business has one-stop shopping for blog and web setup.
