Should You Use a Directory Submission Service?

When it comes to building traffic and creating backlinks, directory submission is a good idea, but it is also one of the most dreadfully tedious tasks a blogger could ever undertake. Does it work? It’s been my experience that it does. A friend of mine sent me an email the other day saying his visitors were up by a third after I had submitted his site URL to about 30 directories. I used directory submission software to speed up the process, but it was still a completely boring chore. I hated it, but I did it because I knew it would be beneficial.

Today I found out about a Directory Submission Service called Submit Edge. Their prices are wonderfully inexpensive, and their directory submissions are all manual. In other words, they are performed by people, not automated software. This is important because of the variability in the form fields of directory submission forms. It really takes a human touch to stay on top of the submission process so that submissions follow the directory’s terms of service and are accurate. If I had known these guys existed before, I probably would’ve used them and could’ve spent my time doing more effective tasks than plugging away at some directory submission software.

I did not think to outsource directories submissions. I did it by myself, and although it is not extremely time-consuming (given that you already have the directories list), is very boring. I’ll check out the service you mentioned, thanks for sharing the info.

Thanks, Simonne! Feel free to return here afterwards and leave a comment about your experience with them or a trackback to a post about it if you decide to blog about it yourself. Thanks for commenting!

Do you think it is preferable to post articles on a blog or post article snippets on the blog and then submit articles to an article directory?

I see many people using their blogs for posting full articles and wondered which was more appropriate from a traffic generation and PR perspective.
    Thanks.

@Micheal: My opinion on article directories is that they are a legal gateway through which quasi-legal ad-spam sites and splogs acquire content. Look at any great blogger out there, and you will not find one single person who submits to article directories. My post was on submitting to link directories, which actually does help you get some traffic.

Michael, Thanks for the response and I apologize if I bumped the thread. That wasn’t my intention. I should have given it more thought before jumping in.

I have checked out Submit Edge and it appears to be great value in comparison to what I have seen to date. I am going to make a submission today. Thanks for providing the tip.

@Micheal: No sweat, I just wanted to make sure you weren’t getting things mixed up. If you get good results from using the service, feel free to come back here and tell everyone or link back to here if you blog about it yourself.

Thanks Michael, this is good advice. I thought that directories aren’t that important, but from your friends results, it seems they might be. I’ll check out the Submit Edge service - I need all the help I can get..

Michael, what do you think about using article submission for non-content sites like a build a niche store?

Dannie - This is directory submission, not article submission. Directory submission for a BANS site is fine. For article submission sites, your articles would need to include a link to the BANS site in the article content in a useful and appropriate fashion. If you can’t pull that off, then don’t bother because you’ll just be wasting your own precious time. Hope that helps. :)
