No blogs about pornographic or illegal [...]

It’s easy to over-analyze this and create gigantic super-lists of tasks that are numbingly detailed. I thought for a change I’d keep it short and sweet:
Write a post that explains why you started the blog, what the blog is going to be about, and where you see it going.
Get rid of the “hello world” post.
Get [...]

I’ve updated my comment/trackback policy (for which there is a link above the comment box on single post pages).
Specifically, I’ve added that I will reject your comment if the site url you provide leads to an automated blog and I determine that the blog provides no value to myself or my readers. Splogs and MFA [...]

if you don’t back up, and the 2.3 upgrade dribbles acid all over your database, you have only yourself to blame.

You may have heard the blogosphere described as an echo chamber. That’s a way to describe the effect I’m talking about. Metabloggers blog about blogging itself. About how to blog. About how to make money blogging. About how to bring traffic to your blog. The problem is, they’re not getting this to the people who really need it. Their audience seems to consist primarily of other metabloggers!

I’m always coming up with ideas for blogs that I’ll never create, but which might be perfect for somebody else. I haven’t done any keyword research on these, so you’re on your own for that. These are not overcrowded niches; some of these will have an extremely limited audience. Remember the long tail and that [...]

I’ve leveled some criticism at BlogRush lately, as have some others. I’m not much for neutrality: if it works, I’m for it. If it doesn’t, I’m against it. In spite of my criticism, when BlogRush first came out, I said in my first post about it that I respected John Reese. That’s true. Here is [...]

If BlogRush did what it said on the box, it would be wonderful, but it simply fails to live up to its promise. It doesn’t deliver traffic. It doesn’t benefit your blog’s readers. I’m not hating on it and I have nothing but respect for John Reese, but I’m sorry — there’s just no reason good enough for me to keep the BlogRush widget on here.

Blog coaching shortens the blogging learning curve and helps you be the best you can at it in the shortest possible time. If you’re serious about having the benefits of a business blog, you will find a good blog coach or consultant is well worth your investment. This is a clear value in trading money for time.

I introduce something new, fresh, and much more fun! It’s called Overheard in the Metablogosphere. The idea is to present a quote that’s either funny (especially out of context), or intriguing and mysterious enough to compel you to follow the link. The whole idea here is the mystery of decontextualization (and that, my friends, is your $3 word for the day). I hope you like it.

Some folks have said that BlogRush might violate Google AdSense terms of service. It’s important to voice concerns and make sure we’re clear about the repercussions of what we do. I respect my fellow bloggers who are raising doubts about BlogRush, but where it concerns Google AdSense policies violations I think those doubts aren’t justified.
I’ve [...]

I found some old treasures in my archives. Thought I’d dust ‘em off and take ‘em out. Set ‘em on the table and let you look at them for a while. Then put them back. You’ll always be able to find them. That’s why they call them archives.

I recently installed BlogRush, a link/traffic widget, which I wrote about last Sunday.
I wonder if the nature of it is such that it doesn’t really increase traffic for you unless you’ve already got huge traffic. If anything, it might increase the disparity between popular blogs and newly established blogs.
Whether or not BlogRush does what it [...]

Yes, I’ve added the BlogRush traffic widget. You may have seen other bloggers posting about it, too. When I first heard the idea, I was skeptical: traffic for practically no effort? Yeah, right. I think I’ll buy that spam-o-matic internet marketing system, too!
Except for one thing: BlogRush is run by John Reese, of Income.com. I [...]

Managing a blog is like tending a garden. Once a seed is planted–a blog post is written, a comment is left, a contact is made–you cannot ignore it or it will die. It must be properly nurtured. In order to reap your harvest, you must tend your garden. If you plant seeds and tend your garden wisely, you will reap a harvest of traffic, links, subscribers, advertsing/affiliate earnings, new friendships, and new opportunities.
