Just Started a Blog? Submit Your Blog Here for a Boost!

by Michael Martine on December 20, 2007 · 108 comments

UPDATE: I’ve closed comments on this, because it was so popular that the list of blogs for people to visit is getting too long. This isn’t a bad thing, it’s a wonderful thing! Rest assured I will do this again in the near future! But for now, I’d like to thank all of you who participated in this. Keep an eye out for the next one!

When your blog is new, the one thing you want more than anything else is traffic.

There are many people at any given moment starting blogs, every minute of every day, in a vacuum as if there were nobody else out there to read their blog.

I want to try a little experiment in boosting blog traffic. Keep reading to see how it’s going to go.

The Golden Rule at Work

If you just started a blog and want a little traffic boost, here’s what you do:

  1. Leave a comment with your blog’s URL in the website field and describe your blog in a short paragraph.
  2. Make sure you subscribe to the comments so that you get alerted on every new comment.
  3. Every time a new comment is added, go and visit that blog! This is simply the golden rule at work: do for others as you would have them do for you.
  4. Subscribe to the other blogs’ RSS feeds.
  5. Stumble a post or two from the blog.
  6. Write a post on your own blog about the new blogs you have found and link to them.

You Must Participate for this to Succeed

If you just submit your link and that’s it, well, nothing’s gonna happen. The more you give, the more you get. Spend time visiting the other blogs, commenting and subscribing to their feeds.

You will also get some traffic from my readers who have already been blogging for a while. I’d like to encourage my regular readers to spread the link to this post around: this is one of those the-more-the-merrier kinds of things. So please link, stumble, and bookmark at Delicious. I’m not making any promises about huge traffic, but you’ll probably get more than from BlogRush, let’s put it that way. ;)

Some Rules

My comments are moderated. The following will be deleted or marked as spam:

  • Automated blogs or splogs
  • Adult content blogs
  • Content about illegal activities
  • Hate speech
  • Anything that seems suspicious to me or that isn’t above-board
  • Your blog has to be less than 3 months old

Updated: Your blog can be older than three months old–I’ve made an “executive override decision” :) on this, since it seems, at second thought, to be an unnecessary barrier to participation.

Ready? Post your new blog URL in the comments!

Michael – what rude guests we’ve been – I just realized no one had “dugg” this fabulous article (Golden Rule Violation #1 – :-) so I just did – hey readers – consider giving Michael a digg if you’ve like it – I’m sure he appreciates extra traffic too :-)

Also thanks to @searchJim who did a great article about our blog (thank you I’m blushing) – I dugg it and he’s gotten more traffic from that from my extended readers and friends and the social community at large. Wanna read it?
http://digg.com/design/Florida_Real_Estate_Blog_Realtors_Wake_Up

Art’s financial site it fabulous and gets my wheels spinning – it’s easy to see why he was selected as one of the best blogs across industries. I’ve met other real estate professionals across the country and ones with similar beach resort niches.

Food and Wine and music and more have my creative blogging juices flowing.

For those that haven’t done it – stumble can drive huge traffic and it seems to give more weight when different people stumble your posts so a big tent is a good tent!

Michael – thanks again – as always I digg YOU!!!! :-)

Good golly Michael look what you started here! :) I will try and add everyone new to my reader. I have been to a few so far and hope to get to everyone in the next few days. – Ashley

Ok, I have learned more today than I imagined visiting most of the blogs. Unbelievable the good stuff out there.

4 Dennis December 27, 2007 at 9:03 pm

I am going to bed – just read 200 great rss feeds, mind in overload.

@Cyndee, Thank you for pointing out that we had failed to properly tell our host how much we Digg him. Also, thanks for the kind words about my blog. I am enjoying yours too!

Michael, this is really cool. Thanks for getting the ball rolling.

6 Robert December 27, 2007 at 11:03 pm

@Troy – one thing you might consider is focusing more on your audience, and not having both business and personal (or a wide array of topics) because that tends to dilute your message. I have my site building / marketing blog but it’s seperate from my personal “thoughts and wanders around the world” blog. That’s good, because the other isn’t updated near as often as should be. :)

7 Beautiful Minds December 28, 2007 at 4:03 am

Michael, will commenting here earns traffic?
Then cool.. here is my comment ;)

(Oops..! ur also in do follow..!(juz saw thy policy) good! )

Great idea! My blog is a discussion on why America is the greatest country in the world. It’s also a discussion on why we need to keep it that way and how we go about doing that. If you love America and are thankful for what she has provided you, come and visit my blog.

9 Charlotte Real Estat December 28, 2007 at 7:23 am

Thanks Mike, great way to kick off a relatively new blog. Charlotte Communities is 4 months old and if I’ve done it right, a community sight with loads of local real estate and community information about the greater Charlotte area. I am a broker, but virtually all of my clients are moving to Charlotte from outside the area. This is the kind of stuff they like… I hope. Terry McDonald

10 Michael Martine December 28, 2007 at 8:44 am

@everyone: again, thanks so much for your participation. There are a bunch o’ new blogs for everyone to visit, bookmark, stumble, subscribe to, etc., so please get on that when you can.

I would also like to point out that there are only so many characters available in the Name comment field. Instead of trying to game a phrase in search, maybe consider just using your name from now on.

Okay, it’s a week after your original post, but I will take any opportunity to promote my blog about midlife career changes. And, just to be fair, I’m going to spend some time going back through the comments and visiting as many sites as I can before my eyes just give out on me.

Watch out…here I come. And thanks in advance to those of you who visit my blog!

Thanks in advance for the blog boost!

My blog centers around marketing for small businesses. It’s only been truly active for one month. My goal is to continue to develop the content so that it’ll become a helpful resource to small business owners. Today’s post covers my blogging goals for 2008.

I’m looking forward to checking out everyone’s blogs. Thanks again!

17 Camilla January 1, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Thanks for the exposure!

On my site I feature products created by solopreneurs, entrepreneurs or small business owners.

18 Jeremy January 2, 2008 at 10:52 am

Thanks to everyone who visited GearPipe and left a comment, especially Terry McDonald who’s passing my site on to his guitar playing sons. That, to me, is what makes exercises like this worth it.

Terry…if I ever move to Charlotte and need a house, I’ll give you a ring ;-)

19 AndroidGuys January 3, 2008 at 8:42 am

AndroidGuys is a site dedicated to Google’s Android as well as the Open Handset Alliance. We cover network providers, phone manufacturers, and software developers. Updated a few times a day, we are run by a couple of guys with a love of gadgets, technology, and especially smart phones.

I love this idea, my blog is on the niche of click fraud or invalid clicks as the search engines will have us call it.

I offer advice on how to combat the problem, gain refunds from the pay per click suppliers and tackle related problems such as stopping low quality clicks from made for adsense sites and adwords for domains.

Anyone looking for guest posts in related niches please let me know.

My blog is montetised via a consultancy service for SME or companies running smaller pay per click campaigns.

22 Heather January 4, 2008 at 7:15 pm

I came here via Chris Garrett’s blog so just shows how well this all works.

My blog is about vacation rental and gives second home owners all the information they need to set up and rent their second homes. I am encouraging them to set up their own blogs so will be posting more often on blog creation. Bearing in mind that most of my target market readers have never read a blog I am working on educating them, so I am looking for blogs to recommend.

23 WAH(web)Mommy January 6, 2008 at 7:58 am

This is a great idea, Michael!

My blog is just over 4 months old, and I’m finally starting to make an active effort at doing more networking (finding more blogs to read, making more comments, using the social bookmarking sites, etc.)

This sounds like a great experiment that I’d love to be a part of!

As far as my blog…

I’m a WAHM (Work at Home Mom), Wife, and Mommy to a very active, but so wonderful, toddler. I work at home full time while moonlighting as a freelance web designer in my spare time.

My official goal (aka 2008 resolution) is to become a successful full time freelancer, while maintaining a healthy work/life balance.

This blog chronicles the process of reaching my goals, as well as offering helpful resources that I’ve found along the way.

I hope you’ll join me in my quest to reach full time freelance status!

Thanks again for this opportunity Michael! I look forward to finding some great new blogs through this experiment!

24 Joe January 6, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Just finished updating my subscriptions. I have everybody now. Good stuff here. This is some really good reading, gang. Thanks. Tonight I’ll get everyone a stumbleupon vote or digg vote or two as I’m reading.

25 Mark Dowling January 6, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Hi Michael,

Great idea. My blog is on a URL that’s about 15 months old, but the blog itself has been up only 4 months. It’s my company blog and it focuses on traffic generation techniques for small/ medium businesses. We use a 4-step methodology – analyze, optimize, advertise, publicise – and blogging fits squarely in the ‘publicise’ arena.

regards
Mark

Hello once again Michael & Everyone else!

I’ve killed all my blogs, including my personal blog, therefore I’ve started a new one. Ko-Ta.com once again, it is a personal blog, not much more useful than my previous blog, but it is better…

Blog is less than a month old, it is mostly covering my day-to-day life, where I also share anything I think might be of any use to anyone.

p.s. I am not much of a blogger, but I do enjoy commenting.

Remarkablogger is a wonderful thing, Since Michael Martine first mentioned my homebrew blog, my traffic has gone way up!

Now, I have a new site, this blog is about politics, world news, global warming and so on. I know that there are a lot of sites that talk about politics, but this one is a little bit different, OpinionHead.com is Politically Incorrect, and has a discussion board as well. Come on and take a peek, all views and attitudes are welcome!

38 CatherineL January 21, 2008 at 6:58 am
