I’m doing it AGAIN. Oh… did you think I was done helping you increase blog traffic? No, my friends! For you see, now it is time to take the idea even further and extend it to Twitter.
Getting established on social media can be a tough, uphill battle (kinda like starting a blog). I want to help you get tweetin’ on Twitter as a way to complement your blogging: your newfound blog traffic can follow you on Twitter, and your newfound Twitter pals have a chance to be exposed to your blog. They both enhance each other.
Does Twitter Increase Traffic to Your Blog?
In a word, yes, but it depends on many factors. My experience has been nothing but positive. I get traffic from other Twitter users who like what I do on Twitter, which causes them to view my Twitter profile page, which causes them to click on the link there to my blog. Same thing can happen for you.
Here’s the Deal
The way the Remarkablogger Twitter FollowUp works is like this:
- You leave a comment below with your Twitter profile URL in it, like this: http://twitter.com/remarkablogger (no Twitter account? Hang on–resources below!). Put it right in the comment message box, and don’t put in any other links or my spam filter will eat you. Just put your regular blog URL in the comment’s “website” box.
- Subscribe to the comments on this post so when new people post their Twitter profile URLs, you can visit them and follow them. DON’T FORGET TO SUBSCRIBE TO COMMENTS.
- Everybody follows everybody! That’s why it’s called the Twitter FollowUp.
- Before you know it, you’ve got a healthy Twitter posse!
It couldn’t be simpler. And it makes sense to do this right on the heels of the Blog Traffic JumpStart 2, because blogging and using Twitter are really different forms of the same thing: they’re both forms of blogging and they’re both forms of social media. Blogging and social media enhance each other. Doing this while we have momentum from the Traffic JumpStart is the way to carry this forward.
Follower/Followed Ratio
How can you tell a spammer on Twitter? They follow over a thousand people, but nobody follows them. Twitter users pay attention to the ratio of followers to followed. Having huge numbers of followers means you’re popular. Having a decent number of followed means you’re actively engaged in Twitter, and that’s what this little experiment is trying to help you achieve. Besides, the fun part about Twitter is all the other people to have conversations with! The beauty part about this little exercise is that it increases both numbers.

Da Rulez
- No spammypants or bot Twitter accounts.
- You don’t have to be new blogger or a new tweeter–you just want some new cool people to follow and to grow your own list of followers.
- Follow back as many people as you feel comfortable with and whom you think you will like (hey, you can unfollow them later).
- If you follow me, I will follow you back: http://twitter.com/remarkablogger .
- Link to this post, email it to friends and family far and wide, bookmark it on social media, and tweet it! Just as with the Blog Traffic JumpStart 2, the more participants this game has, the better it works for everyone, so SPREAD THE TWEETFUL WORD!
- Bask in the glow of the camaraderie with all your new-found Twitter peeps.

I’m not marketing services on Twitter; actually, I have more work than I can handle. However, I use Twitter to connect with many in the SEO/SEM industry and have a few friends I know in “real” life. I also use it to keep up with latest news and reports.
Wow, you’re just The Great Connector these days, aren’t you?

I see that you use twhirl. Is that what you recommend for most people?
Dude - This is off the hook!! You’re Mr. Traffic man this week - RemarkaTraffic. Hey, that domain is not taken.
You better take it Michael.

@Hunter - At least for today, anyway. I love Twhirl. I think most people will get more out of Twitter with such an application, but it’s not the only one. TweetDeck is another one that’s popular, and there are a couple that are Mac-only.
@Bill - When you’re building up a head of steam, it doesn’t make sense to stop. You gotta keep going! Thanks for the suggestion!
Doh!! Forgot to check Subscribe…
I use Twhirl and Tweetdeck. I think I prefer Tweetdeck though.

I would like to think that this is a great idea, but part of me is skeptical.
Whenever I follow somebody on Twitter, that’s because I enjoy reading the short updates. Similarly, I want people who follow me on Twitter at least enjoy reading my updates, rather than “following me because I follow you.”
Hmm..
@michael makes me laugh when someone follows you then sends you a dm to say hi and by the time you get round to seeing it (because of sleep) they are not following you anymore so you cant reply
guys check if the person is a fit for you first dont just follow them because they are on this list!
@chrisgarrett followed dm’d free ebook msg then unfollowed, not cool chrisg!

@Pelf - You can look over a person’s tweets when you click through to their profile page, and if you don’t like what you see, nobody can make you follow them.
Otherwise, I’d encourage everyone to give people a chance to prove themselves. We can unfollow later.
If anyone wants to get and keep followers, always be aware of what value you are bringing to that follower’s life with your tweets. If all you do is post new blog posts and what sandwich you’re eating, well, I’d unfollow you, too! Mix it up. Share links, commentaries, and get involved in conversations. Give people the “good stuff.”
Sorry, we old guys forget a lot. And… I forgot to subscribe to the comments… again.
